The establishment of protected areas can alter patterns of resource use in both marine and terrestrial environments. To complement long-term monitoring of marine protected areas in the Coral Triangle, WWF and its partners are analyzing broader changes in land use and land cover (LULC). We are seeking a motivated intern to support a regional-scale analysis of LULC change using remotely sensed imagery.
Internship responsibilities will include supporting the acquisition and processing of remote sensing imagery, land cover change detection analyses, and assistance in producing written reports. Depending on the analyses performed, this internship may include opportunities to publish in the peer-reviewed literature, or may form the basis of a Master’s project. This internship is an excellent opportunity to interact with scientists in WWF-US and around the world; gain exposure to a wide range of conservation science and policy issues; and inform adaptive management of protected areas.
The successful applicant will have a background in natural science or geography, with experience conducting remote sensing analyses, and an interest in biodiversity conservation. Demonstrated experience with remote sensing/image processing software (e.g., Erdas IMAGINE or ENVI), image classification and land cover change detection is required. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential. The successful applicant will be able to work independently, as well as part of an international, interdisciplinary team.
